How to Make Website WCAG Compliant?

A website is more than just a digital presence. It is a platform through which people access information, interact with businesses, purchase products, and access services. For that reason, a good website should be designed to work for as many people as possible, including people with disabilities.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide a framework for making websites and digital content more accessible. Following these guidelines can help ensure that people with different visual, hearing, mobility, and cognitive abilities can navigate and interact with a website effectively.

Website accessibility starts with good design. A clean layout, clear navigation, readable typography, and sufficient contrast can make a website easier to understand and use. Important information should not depend solely on colour, and interactive elements should be clearly identifiable.

Images also need to be considered. Adding meaningful alternative text (alt text) to informative images allows screen readers to communicate their purpose to users who cannot see them. Decorative images, on the other hand, should be appropriately marked so that they do not create unnecessary distractions for assistive technologies.

Navigation is another important part of accessibility. Users should be able to move through a website using a keyboard without being forced to rely entirely on a mouse or touchscreen. Menus, buttons, forms, links, and other interactive elements should have a logical and predictable order.

Forms should also be designed with accessibility in mind. Every important input should have a clear label, instructions should be easy to understand, and error messages should explain what went wrong and how the user can correct it. This is particularly important for registration, login, checkout, and contact forms.

Multimedia content requires additional consideration. Videos should ideally include captions, while important audio information should have an appropriate text alternative. This allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing to access the same information.

Website accessibility also depends on the underlying code. Proper HTML structure, meaningful headings, accessible buttons, descriptive links, and appropriate use of ARIA where necessary can help assistive technologies understand the structure and purpose of a page.

Performance matters too. A website that is extremely slow, difficult to navigate, or poorly optimized can create barriers for users, particularly those accessing it through slower connections or less powerful devices. Accessibility and usability should therefore be considered together.

Testing is an essential part of the process. Automated accessibility tools can identify common problems, but automated testing alone cannot detect everything. Websites should also be tested manually, including keyboard navigation, screen-reader compatibility, forms, menus, colour contrast, and other important user interactions.

Making a website WCAG compliant should not be treated as a final step before launch. Accessibility should be considered from the planning and design stages and maintained throughout the life of the website. As content, features, and technologies change, accessibility should be reviewed regularly.

A more accessible website is ultimately a better website. It can provide a more consistent experience, reach a wider audience, improve usability, and demonstrate that an organization values inclusion.

Accessibility is not about designing for a small group of people. It is about removing unnecessary barriers so that everyone can use the web.
